Behold the pig, the common swine, the barnyard hog.

A most amazing animal.

When we think of pigs, we usually think of bacon, ham, and pork chops.

Lots of other images come to mind, too: Porky and Peppa from cartoons and Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web.

And, of course, Miss Piggy, from the muppets.

What do we really know about pigs?

Yet what do we really know about pigs?

Livestock experts and other scientists have discovered that this multi-purpose animal is a lot like the family dog.

Pigs know their own names, can recognize friends, have very sensitive snouts and skin, and have unique personalities.

Mother pigs “sing” to their piglets.

And pigs can play fetch.

Game-playing pigs?

Yes, they can play fetch.

And sit, stay and can follow other commands too.

A few pigs have even been taught to play video games.

Really.

They do know how to have fun!

And that has been scientifically proven.

They can even get sunburned!

Pigs on the beach?

They actually are good swimmers.

Great contributors to science

This bright and intelligent and tasty animal also brings other important things to humankind through science and medicine.

Tissue from pig heart valves have been transplanted into people.

Many surgical techniques have been taught using pigs because their organs are similar in size to those of humans,

It has been said that if it works in a pig, it will work in a human.

A pig may have saved your life!

The CT or CAT scan was developed using pig tissue.

Certain hormones in the brain were identified using pigs.

Researchers have learned about heart attacks from pigs because they have them too!

So, the next time you sit down to a meal of pork chops or ham or your breakfast bacon, say a prayer of thanks for the pig.

And in the infamous words of Porky Pig, “That’s all, folks!”

What's for dinner?
