The Difference Between Fruits and Vegetables

The difference between fruits and vegetables.

When is a fruit really a vegetable?

The U.S. Supreme Court Declares a Fruit a Vegetable

Only when the U.S. Supreme Court says so.

In 1893, the United States Supreme Court ruled that a tomato was a vegetable.  Even though everyone in the botanical world knows that a tomato is a fruit.

Many “Vegetables” Are Really Fruits

You see a fruit develops from the ovary of a flowering plant.

Tomato, eggplant, corn, green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, okra, cucumber, pumpkin and lots of other food that we consider to be vegetables are actually botanically a fruit.

Real Vegetables Are Parts of the Actual Plant That We Eat

Real vegetables on the other hand are all the other parts of the actual plant that we eat like the roots, leaves, and stems.

So, beets, potatoes, celery, broccoil, spinach, brussels sprouts, and lettuce are examples of vegetables.

You see, we commonly categorize fruits as sweet like apples, oranges, lemons, mangoes, papayas, bananas, and the list could go on.

But designation according to savory or sweet is not how the botanical world rolls.

And here’s a mind blower, if you love rhubarb as in rhubarb crisp, rhubarb pie, or rhubarb jam, rhubarb is actually a vegetable, not a fruit because it’s the stem of the plant that’s consumed.

Why The U.S. Supreme Court Ruled a Tomato Was A Vegetable

So why did the U.S. Supreme Court rule that a tomato was a vegetable rather than a fruit – so the government could tax it at a higher rate.

Now you know.
